September 2021 – In Philadelphia, Catholic Social Services (CSS) foster agency excludes same-sex couples from consideration when placing children in foster homes. The dispute over whether or not this exclusion should bar CSS from participating in the city’s foster program appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court, which sided 9-0 with CSS.
“Philadelphia’s attempts to exclude the Catholic Church from foster care” are a violation of the First Amendment according to CSS.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion stating, “CSS seeks only an accommodation that will allow it to continue serving the children of Philadelphia in a manner consistent with its religious beliefs; it does not seek to impose those beliefs on anyone else.”
