January-February 2021 – On October 31, Navy SEAL Team Six conducted a hostage rescue operation in Northern Nigeria, where American missionary Philip Nathan Walton was being held captive. Days earlier, on October 27, Walton had been taken from his farm in Massalata, a village across the border in Niger.
His kidnappers demanded more than $1 million from the Walton family, threatening to turn Walton over to local extremist groups if the ransom was not paid. After the successful mission, both President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence commented on the bravery of America’s armed service members.
“Last night, U.S. Navy SEALs rescued an American taken captive in Niger,” said Pence. “That U.S. citizen is safe, and no military personnel were injured in the operation. The armed forces of the United States of America are the greatest force for good in the history of the world.”
