August 2021 – Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) signed The Unborn Child Dignity Act into law in early May. It became effective July 1. The law requires abortion facilities to “pay for and provide for the cremation or [burial] of the fetal remains from a surgical abortion performed at that facility.”
When former Vice President Mike Pence was governor of Indiana, he signed a similar bill into law. After a lower court struck down the measure, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld it in 2019. In late 2020, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) signed a comparable measure into law, though it was blocked by a judge just a day before its effective date.
