April 2021 – “When you need help, call the pros.” That’s what a South Carolina mayor said and did when a computer glitch caused a traffic jam at a local COVID-19 vaccination site resulting in hour-long waits.
Who did Mount Pleasant mayor Will Haynie call? Local Chick-fil-A manager Jerry Walkowiak, of course!
“I called [Walkowiak] on my way over [to the site], and he actually got there before I did,” Haynie said. “He was standing there. He was moving people along.”
Walkowiak quickly diagnosed the problem, put additional volunteers in place, and reduced the wait time from 1 hour to 15 minutes. His expertise allowed for more than 1,000 vaccinations to be given that day.
