September 1993 – I just returned from the 1993 National Men’s Conference sponsored by an organization known as Promise Keepers. The gathering of 50,000 men was held in Boulder, Colorado on the campus of Colorado University and attracted men from all 50 states and every continent except Antarctica. We still don’t know what happened to those guys.
Most of us have attended events that have impacted our lives in a very powerful way. This experience was—and I think I speak for the other 49,999 men—simply awesome. To hear 50,000 men singing praises to God and pledging themselves to be men of integrity, valor, honesty and purity in a world of immorality, shifting values and deceit was—to say the very least—refreshing.
I want to share with you the seven commitments that one must sign onto in order to be a “promise keeper.” They are:
1) Honor Jesus Christ through prayer, worship, and obedience to His Word.
2) Spiritual, moral, ethical and sexual purity.
3) Build strong marriages and families through love, protection, and biblical values.
4) Support the mission of my church, by honoring and praying for my pastor and by actively giving my time and resources.
5) Reach beyond any racial and denominational barriers to demonstrate the power of biblical unity.
6) Influence my world, being obedient to the Great Commandment (Mark 12:30-31) and the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20).
7) Pursue vital relationships with a few other men, understanding that I need my brothers to help me keep my promises.
A nation is only as strong as the families which make it up. If we are to turn things around in America—turn back from the slippery slope of moral and social decline we’ve been on—then Christian men in our country must lead the way and lead by example. The Promise Keepers movement is on the brink of sweeping the country. It was founded in 1990 by Colorado University head football coach Bill McCartney with 71 men. In 1991 it grew to 4,200 men who gathered in Boulder and in 1992 22,000 men were present. And this year 50,000. Thousands more who couldn’t attend were with us in spirit.
